Xiamen Metro, also Xiamen Rail Transit (Chinese: 厦门轨道交通 or 厦门地铁), is a rapid transit system in Xiamen (Fujian, China) currently under construction and scheduled to be operational in 2017.
==Background==

Planning of metro system began in early 2000s but China's elevated Xiamen BRT was the first to opened in the city in 2008. The initial phase of construction of the metro system was compiled as the Xiamen Urban Rail Transit Construction Plan 2011–2020 on the December 24, 2010 and was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in May 11, 2012.〔(China approves 25 urban rail projects to boost economy )〕〔(Xiamen urban rail transit project approved by NDRC )〕 The construction started in November 13, 2013.〔(Xinhua. China's Xiamen begins subway construction. )〕 Xiamen Urban Rail Transit Group founded for construction and operation.
Approved phase of system development includes three lines (1, 2, 3) with 62 stations, 79.04 km in length, The construction cost is projected to be 50.37 billion yuan.
First Line 1 with 24 stations, 31.5 (30.3 useful) km length, 50 min duration of trip and 20.39 billion yuan cost of construction will be completed around December 31, 2016. Line has south-north direction, the depot at northern end and will be main in system. Line will go through Northern and Central railway stations and will connect island (with 9 stations) and mainland (with 14 stations) parts of city through dam (with 1 station). Route: Lundu Ferry Terminal - Old Town - Xiamen Railway Station - Jimei New Town - Xiamen North Railway Station.
Line 2 will have 22 stations, 28.94 km length and 17.62 billion yuan cost of construction and scheduled to complete two years after opening of system. It will go from east to west within island part mainly and then through Haicang channel to mainland and connect the Airport (at Huli District) and th southern rail station. Route: Wuyuan Bay - Guanyinshan - Jiangtou - Northern bank of Yundang Lake - Haicang New Town.
Line 3 with 16 stations, 18.6 km length and 12.36 billion yuan cost of construction scheduled to complete four years after opening of system. It will go within island part mainly from south-west to north-east. Route: Xiamen Port - Bailuzhou - Old industrial area in Huli District - Xiang'an New Town.
The metro will use Alstom Metropolis/Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works type B six-car rolling stock carrying 1400 passengers.
